I don't have any pictures (sorry!), but our friend Grig came to stay with us for a few days on his way back from a work event in Amsterdam. We had a great time catching up on what we've been missing in NYC. Caleb loved seeing Grig and Grig discovered that full-time parenting is exhausting!
We celebrated Caleb's first Rosh Hashannah with a festive feast. I made Nanny's vegetable soup, pot roast with autumn veggies and Wendy's noodle kugel (it was all delicious!). I also made an orange pudding cake, but it didn't turn out exactly as I'd hoped. Caleb joined us for the first part of the meal and ate applesauce and a tiny little crumble of challah bread. He couldn't partake in the honey (botulism!) but we think he thoroughly enjoyed his first Jewish new year.
What did you make me wear??
On second thought, I make this look good!
I love my dada
Are y'all ready to eat yet??
The spread...yum
I also decided to further try to morph into my idol, Ina Garten of Barefoot Contessa fame, and make my own chicken stock. So one night I stayed up until after midnight to see the fruits of my labor (I didn't read the instructions carefully and didn't realize it needed to cook for 4 hours). At the time it seemed like an unending supply of stock, but I've already used up most of it. But it was incredibly easy to make so I'll have to make another batch soon.
I've also been trying to teach Caleb how to use a sippy cup. He loves to drink water from mama and dada's grown-up cups but hasn't quite mastered the sippy cup yet.
This is easy!
Maybe I need more practice...
Also, Caleb has been very busy trying to crawl. Up until now, I've done everything I can to discourage him from crawling. I know, I'm an awful person. But it's not a vital developmental milestone and I knew my days would become even more hectic once he's on the move.
Despite my best efforts, he's determined to learn. It started about a week and a half ago when we noticed he would get on all fours in his crib. He then started the rocking, and now takes little frog hops forward. He can also slither backwards which is funny to watch (he doesn't find it amusing because he wants to go forward).
So I'm pretty sure I only have a week at most before he's really on the move. But here are some cute pictures of him trying to crawl...
I think I can...I think I can...
Ma- enough with the pictures! I'm trying to crawl here!
Gorgeous boy
Our new friends Rachel and Ric (they are also from the US) came over this weekend with their adorable 9-month-old, James. James and Caleb usually kind of ignore each other but this time James seemed pretty interested in discovering what Caleb was all about. The best part was when James stuck his finger in Caleb's mouth.
Also, my cousin-in-law John Slater (Lane's husband) has started a family blog. He's already posted some really great videos. Those kids crack me up! Check it out! http://theslaterfive.wordpress.com/
That pretty much sums up what has been an amazing September. It really is so cool to watch this child grown and learn. Caleb, babe, I love ya so much, even though you disobeyed me and continue to try to crawl. Keep it up, kiddo... We love you!
So glad to see new pictures of that beautiful boy! Miss you so much!!
